Type
Complications Chronograph (Triple Calendar Chronograph)
Brand
Rolex (Rolex SA), a top-tier luxury Swiss manufacturer known for durability and precision.
Movement
Manual-wind column-wheel chronograph, Caliber Valjoux 72C, 18,000 vph, approximately 40-hour power reserve, 17 jewels.
Dimensions
36mm diameter, 13.5mm thickness, 44mm lug-to-lug, 19mm lug width. It wears slightly larger due to the thick Oyster case profile.
Description
The Ref. 6036 is one of the most complex and desirable vintage Rolexes ever made. Known as the 'Jean-Claude Killy' after the legendary Olympic skier who wore one, it combines a waterproof Oyster case with a triple calendar and a three-register chronograph.
Key Features
Triple calendar windows below 12, outer date track, non-luminous star/pyramid indices, and the 'Anti-Magnetic' designation above the 6 o'clock subdial.
Dial Description
Matte silver/off-white dial with sunken sub-dials. Features gold pyramidal (star/diamond) indices, gold alpha hands, and a blue outer date track. Windows for Day and Month at 12 o'clock; blue pointer hand for the date.
Case Material
Stainless Steel (Oyster case), likely 316L, featuring a polished finish on the bezel and lugs with brushed case sides.
Crystal Type
Domed Acrylic/Hessalite crystal, typical of the era, providing a warm distortion at the edges.
Bezel Details
Smooth, fixed stainless steel bezel integrated with the Oyster case structure.
Crown & Pushers
Screw-down 'Super Oyster' or 'Twinlock' crown; round 'pump' style chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock; recessed calendar adjusters on the left case flank.
Bracelet or Strap
Stainless steel 'Beads of Rice' style bracelet (likely aftermarket or period-correct Gay Frères) with Straight end-links and a folding clasp.
Caseback Details
Solid, screw-down stainless steel Oyster caseback, typically plain or with minimal internal hallmarks.
Movement Type
Manual-wind column-wheel chronograph, Caliber Valjoux 72C, 18,000 vph, approximately 40-hour power reserve, 17 jewels.
Water Resistance
Originally rated for 30m-50m; currently considered non-water resistant due to age-related degradation of pusher and caseback seals.
Origin & Provenance
Swiss Made; manufactured in Geneva, Switzerland. Uses a highly modified ebauche movement from Valjoux.
Age Estimate
Circa 1950–1953 based on the 'Oyster Chronograph' text and the specific Ref. 6036 production window.
Cultural Significance
Representing a pre-Daytona era where Rolex competed in the high-complication market, it is a grail for 'scholar' collectors who value mechanical complexity over pure tool-watch aesthetics.
Condition Notes
Very Good vintage condition. Dial shows light, even spotting (patina) consistent with age. Case retains strong lines. Crown and pushers appear original. Bracelet shows some link stretch.
Value Estimate
$150,000 - $350,000 USD depending on exact dial rarity and movement originality. Steel examples are often more coveted by collectors than gold.
Care & Maintenance
Service every 5-7 years by a vintage specialist. Do not expose to water despite the 'Oyster' name, as vintage gaskets often fail. Avoid magnetic fields which can affect the Valjoux hairspring.

Interesting Facts
This is one of only four triple calendar chronograph references ever produced by Rolex. Despite the nickname, Jean-Claude Killy was never an official ambassador for this specific model, but his association fixed its legendary status.
