Brand

Ikepod (founded by Oliver Ike and Marc Newson). Positioned as an 'independent design' luxury brand with high horological and artistic merit.

Automatic/Self-winding GMT. Base ETA 2893-2 or Valjoux 7750-based modified for GMT. Often COSC Chronometer certified.

Dimensions

47mm diameter, 16mm thickness, lugless design (integrated strap). Wears significantly smaller than 47mm because of the rounded 'disco-ball' shape and absence of lugs.

Description

An avant-garde masterpiece of industrial design, the Megapode is a 'pebble' on the wrist. Designed by the legendary Marc Newson, it eschews traditional watch lugs for a seamless, ergonomic shape. It bridges the gap between high art and functional tool watch, utilizing a complex GMT movement within a sculptural stainless steel shell.

Key Features

Lugless circular case, integrated silicone/rubber strap with pin-and-tuck clasp, signature Newson typography, and the distinctive red pill logo.

Dial Description

Sunray silver/grey finish with a separate blue or black outer 24-hour ring. Features stylized Marc Newson Arabic numerals, a red second hand, and a small date window at 3 o'clock. Includes the iconic orange/red 'pill' logo.

Case Material

Brushed stainless steel with an ergonomic, lugless monocoque-style construction.

Crystal Type

Highly domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating; the shape continues the spherical curve of the case.

Bezel Details

Fixed internal bezel/chapter ring with 24-hour markings for GMT functionality.

Crown & Pushers

Oversized screw-down crown with 'Man-prodding-pebble' Ikepod logo, traditionally located at the top (12 o'clock) or side for ergonomic access.

Bracelet or Strap

Integrated black high-quality rubber (FKM) strap with a unique 'pin-and-tuck' fastening system designed for a seamless look.

Caseback Details

Solid screw-down caseback, often featuring a small circular sapphire porthole 'monocoque' window to view the movement balance wheel.

Movement Type

Automatic/Self-winding GMT. Base ETA 2893-2 or Valjoux 7750-based modified for GMT. Often COSC Chronometer certified.

Water Resistance

Rated at 50m (5 ATM). While technically splash-proof, avoid swimming due to the age of the unique case seals.

Origin & Provenance

Swiss Made. Components manufactured in Switzerland; design by Australian industrial designer Marc Newson.

Age Estimate

Circa 1999-2003 (The 'Golden Era' of the original Ikepod brand).

Cultural Significance

A cult classic among architects and designers. It represents a paradigm shift in the 1990s away from traditional case shapes toward 'biomorphism'.

Condition Notes

Very Good. The brushed finish on these large cases often shows micro-scratches from wear. The rubber strap should be checked for brittleness or cracking given its age.

Value Estimate

$2,500 - $4,500 depending on box/papers and specific movement certification.

Care & Maintenance

Service every 5-7 years for the movement. Be extremely careful when replacing straps, as they are proprietary and can be difficult/expensive to source for vintage models.
